THE SECOND WEEK IN ADVENT.

At Prime.

THE PSALMS.

PSALM LIII.

HE foolish body hath said in his heart,
no God.

THE

* There is

Corrupt are they, and become abominable in their wickedness; * there is none that doeth good.

*

God looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any, that would understand, and seek after God.

But they are all gone out of the way, they are altogether become abominable; * there is also none that doeth good, no not one.

Are not they without understanding that work wickedness, * eating up my people as if they would eat bread? they have not called upon God.

They were afraid where no fear was;* for God hath broken the bones of him that besieged thee; thou hast put them to confusion, because God hath despised them. Oh, that the salvation were given unto Israel out of Oh, that the Lord would deliver His people out of captivity!

Sion! *

Then should Jacob rejoice, and Israel should be right glad.

*

My Hope and my Fortress, my Castle and Deliverer, my Defender in Whom I trust; Who subdueth my people that is under me.

*

Lord, what is man, that Thou hast such respect unto him, or the son of man, that Thou so regardest him? Man is like a thing of nought, his time passeth

away like a shadow.

*

Bow Thy heavens, O Lord, and come down,* touch the mountains, and they shall smoke.

*

Cast forth Thy lightning, and tear them, shoot out Thine arrows, and consume them.

Send down Thine hand from above, * deliver me, and take me out of the great waters, from the hand of strange children.

Whose mouth talketh of vanity,* and their right hand is a right hand of wickedness.

I

WILL sing a new song unto Thee, O God,* and sing praises unto Thee upon a ten-stringed lute. Thou hast given victory unto kings, and hast delivered David Thy servant from the peril of the sword.

Save me, and deliver me from the hand of strange children, whose mouth talketh of vanity, and their right hand is a right hand of iniquity.

*

That our sons may grow up as the young plants, and that our daughters may be as the polished corners of the temple.

That our garners may be full and plenteous with all manner of store, *that our sheep may bring forth thousands and ten thousands in our streets.

That our oxen may be strong to labour, that there be no decay,* no leading into captivity, and no complaining in our streets.

*

Happy are the people that are in such a case, yea, blessed are the people who have the Lord for their God.

ANTHEM. We have a strong city: salvation will God appoint for walls and bulwarks. Trust ye in the Lord

for ever; for in the Lord JEHOVAH is everlasting strength. Alleluia.

ISAIAH, XXXII, 1, 2.

EHOLD, a king shall reign in righteousness, and princes shall rule in judgment. And a Man shall be as a hiding place from the wind, and a covert from the tempest; as rivers of water in a dry place, as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land. Thus saith,

THE COLLECT.

LESSED Lord, Who hast caused all holy Scriptures

in such wise hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that by patience, and comfort of Thy holy Word, we may embrace, and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which Thou hast given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain. Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh. Grudge not one against another, brethren, lest

ROMANS, XV. 4, 7.

HATSOEVER things were written aforetime, were written for our learning; that we through patience, and comfort of the Scriptures, might have hope. Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another, according to Christ Jesus; that ye may with one mind, and one mouth, glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Wherefore receive ye one another, as Christ also received us, to the glory of God. And Thou.

V. Remember us, O Lord, with the favour that Thou bearest unto Thy chosen.

R. O visit us with Thy salvation.

At None.

ANTHEM. Behold, our LORD shall come with power; and He shall enlighten the eyes of His servants. Alleluia.

THE LESSON.

ROMANS, XV. 8, 13.

ESUS Christ was a minister of the circumcision for

to promises unte

the fathers: And that the Gentiles might glorify God for His mercy; as it is written, For this cause I will confess to Thee among the Gentiles, and sing unto Thy Name. And again he saith, Rejoice, ye Gentiles, with His people. And again, Praise the Lord, all ye Gentiles, and laud Him, all ye people. And again, Esaias saith, There shall be a root of Jesse, and He that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles, in Him shall the Gentiles trust. Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost. And Thou.

V. Turn us again, O Lord God of Hosts.

R. Show the light of Thy countenance, and we shall be whole.

At Compline.

ANTHEM. Come Thou, O Lord, and visit us in peace; that we may rejoice before Thee with a perfect heart. Alleluia.

When the Saturday in this week falleth upon the 16th day of the month, the Greater Anthem, O wisdom, is sung instead of the foregoing.
